How to Make Your First Roblox Game: A Beginner's Guide
Never built a Roblox game? This walks you through Roblox Studio, building your first world, adding a script, and publishing it so people can play.
Making a Roblox game is more approachable than it looks. Everything happens inside one free tool, and you can have something playable in an afternoon. Here is how to start.
1. Install Roblox Studio
Roblox Studio is the free editor for building games. Download it from the Roblox site, sign in, and open it. Start from a template like Baseplate to get a clean world.
2. Learn the interface
The key panels: the Explorer (everything in your game as a tree), the Properties panel (settings for whatever you select), and the viewport (your world). Spend a few minutes clicking around, selecting parts and changing their properties.
3. Build something
Insert parts and shape them into your world. Move, scale, rotate, and colour them. This is where your game starts to feel real. Do not aim for perfect: aim for playable.
4. Add your first script
Scripts make things happen. Insert a Script into a part and write simple Lua (Luau) to give it behaviour, like changing colour when touched. This is your first taste of programming the game.
5. Playtest
Hit Play to drop into your own game and test it as a player. Iterate: build, test, fix, repeat. Fast iteration is how good games get made.
6. Publish it
When it is ready, publish to Roblox so others can play. Set a name, an icon, and a description, and choose whether it is public. Now you have a real, shareable game.
Where to go next
Once you are comfortable, you will want systems: data saving, shops, combat, UIs. You can build these yourself as you learn, or speed up development with ready-made systems from ModForge so you ship faster instead of reinventing the basics.
