How to Sell Your Game Server on ModForge: A Complete Guide

What the Server Marketplace Is

ModForge's server marketplace is where owners of established game servers — FiveM communities, Minecraft networks, Roblox experiences, and others — list their servers for sale. Buyers get full ownership: the files, the playerbase, the Discord, the brand. It is an acquisition, not a rental.

If you have built something with real players and real history, there is a buyer for it. This guide covers how to present it properly so that buyer finds you.

Step 1: Know What You Are Actually Selling

Before you write a single word of your listing, get clear on what the package includes. Buyers will ask — and vague answers kill deals.

Make a list of everything that transfers:

• Server files — world data, configs, plugin/script files, database dumps
• Domain name — does it transfer? Is it in your name or a registrar account?
• Discord server — full ownership transfer, including admin roles
• Social media accounts — YouTube, TikTok, Twitter/X, Instagram
• Hosting account — does the current host transfer, or does the buyer need their own?
• Revenue — Tebex, PayPal, donation records
• Staff team — are any staff staying on post-sale?

The more complete the package, the higher the price you can justify.

Step 2: Gather Your Numbers

The single biggest mistake sellers make is listing without proof. Buyers on ModForge are not impulse purchasers — they are investors. They want numbers.

What to have ready before listing:

• Peak concurrent players — your best day, your average week
• Monthly active players — unique logins per month
• Discord member count — and how many are active (online in the last 30 days)
• Monthly revenue — average over the last 3 months, not a one-time spike
• Monthly expenses — hosting, domains, any paid staff
• Server age — months or years since first launch
• Uptime percentage — shows reliability

Screenshots of your analytics panel, Tebex dashboard, or Discord member graph are worth more than any description you write. Take them before you list.

Step 3: Price It Correctly

Most servers are priced using a revenue multiple. The standard range for game servers is 12x to 36x monthly net profit (revenue minus expenses), depending on growth trend, age, and player retention.

Stable, established community	15x – 24x
Growing, strong retention	25x – 36x+

Example: A FiveM server making $400/month net, with stable player counts and 2 years of history, is reasonably priced at $6,000 – $9,600.

If your server makes no revenue, price on community value instead: Discord size, player count, and the cost + time it would take to build from scratch. A 500-member active Discord with a finished map and working economy has real value even without monetisation.

Do not overprice based on sentiment. You built it and love it — the buyer did not. Price for what it earns, not what it means to you.

Step 4: Write a Listing That Converts

Your listing title and description are doing sales work. Treat them that way.

Title format that works: [Game] Server — [Key stat] players — [Age] — [Monthly revenue if any]

Examples:

• FiveM RP Server — 80 peak players — 18 months old — $350/mo revenue
• Minecraft SMP — 200 Discord members — 3 years old — Fully custom plugins

Description structure:

1. One-paragraph summary — what the server is, what makes it unique, why you are selling
2. Stats block — peak players, Discord size, revenue, expenses, age, uptime
3. What transfers — the full list from Step 1
4. Why you are selling — be honest. Buyers ask. "Moving on to other projects" or "No longer have time" are fine answers.
5. Support period — will you help the buyer get set up? A 2-week handover period is a strong selling point.

Step 5: Upload Good Images

Listings with images get significantly more views than text-only ones. What to screenshot:

• In-game view of your most impressive area (spawn, main hub, best map)
• Your analytics dashboard showing player counts
• Discord member count and activity
• Tebex or revenue dashboard (blur any personal details)
• A shot of the server list entry showing your player count

Use real screenshots, not edited graphics. Buyers can tell.

Step 6: Handling Buyer Questions

Once your listing is live, expect questions. Respond fast — a buyer who does not hear back within 24 hours will move on.

Common questions and how to answer them:

"Can I see proof of player counts?" Share a screen recording of your analytics panel. Static screenshots can be faked — video is more trusted.

"Why are you selling?" Be direct and honest. Buyers respect straightforward answers far more than vague ones.

"Will you stay on for a handover?" Offer 1–2 weeks of support post-sale. It closes deals.

"Is the revenue consistent?" Share 3 months of income, not just your best month. Consistency is what buyers pay for.

Step 7: The Handover

Once a sale is agreed, the handover is where things get complicated if you are not prepared. Do it in this order:

1. Database export first — dump your database before touching anything else
2. Transfer files — zip and send all server files, configs, plugins/scripts
3. Hosting — help the buyer set up on their host, or transfer the existing hosting account
4. Domain — initiate the domain transfer through your registrar
5. Discord — transfer server ownership (Settings → Members → right-click → Transfer Ownership)
6. Social accounts — change email and password, hand over 2FA codes
7. Tebex / payment — transfer or create a new store under the buyer's account
8. Final check — get on a call with the buyer, walk through everything, confirm it all works

Do not mark the sale complete until the buyer confirms everything transferred correctly.
